Antelope Canyon

Antelope Canyon near Page Arizona has been a place I have wanted to see for a very long time. Recently the opportunity presented itself and I must say the formations are fantastic. The image above gives you an idea of the scale of the canyon as the photographer on the lower right side shows.

Antelope Canyon is made up of both the Upper and Lower Canyons. It is the most visited and photographed canyon in the United States. The Navaho name for the upper canyon is "Tse bighanilini" which means "the place where water runs through rocks". The lower canyon is named "Hasdestwazi" or "spiral rock arches".

A flash flood danger always exists, especially during monsoon season. Rain does not have to fall nearby for flash floods to occur. On August 12, 1997, 11 tourists including 7 from France, 1 from the United Kingdom, 1 from Sweden and 2 from the United States were killed in a flash flood in the Lower Canyon. Very little rain had fallen that day in the vicinity, but an earlier thunderstorm had dumped a large amount of rain into the basin 7 miles upstream.

Thus ends our information session for today.

Live well and prosper.

  1. This is a very good image! I took a close up look at this image and found the man was standing there holding his photography equipment. Having this figure in the deep end of your image not only makes the picture more dramatic but also reveals how interesting your photography trip was!

I could not help laughing when I imagined if the figure is not a photographer but a Japanese traveller who has a mask on his face! It would be even more dramatic!

    Fun working!
