The Bird of Paradise

One of my favourite flowers is the "Bird of Paradise" or in scientific terms the "strelitzia reginae". It is a monocotyledonus flowering plant indigenous to South Africa and the scientific name commemorates Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Streilitz, the queen consort of King George III.

It is the official flower of the City of Los Angeles, although this image was taken in the front yard of our Hawaii home on the island of Kauai.

So now you know:-)

  1. Thank you for telling us about the Bird of Paradise flower. Before I came to Canada, I even had not seen them. The first time when I saw a Bird of Paradise flower plant was in last summer time when Annie and I walked by the railway in Arbuturs St. I love the way it looks like a bird. I think that only God would have thought to make flowers look like birds. I also like their brilliantly color: Red, orange, yellow, green, and even blue.

I saw this image on your Smugmug, in the file "Hawaii 2008", so I could paint in detail when I painted a Bird of Paradise flower painting last week. Thank you honey!

Here is a poem I like very much:
    ...
Two rows of footprints come out through palm trees
The sand beach of emotion has been ploughed, soft and fresh
There is a secret hiding in the mouth of Bird-of-Paradise flower
The restless expression in my eyes is like a pair of bats
    circling over your silent lips
    ...
