Back from Kauai

I just returned with family from Kauai and have begun processing images.  I quite liked this image taken during a rather sudden rain shower.

I will share others soon.

Warm regards,

Images From My New Home

I like this image a lot as I recently took it near my new home on Bowen Island.  The island has many photographic opportunities which I hope to share with you in the coming days.

A Short Visit to Bowen Island

Yesterday I took a short trip to Bowen Island with my daughter and family .  While she and her husband were attending to some business, my grandson and I went looking for berries on the shores of Kilarney Lake.  My grandson noticed this flower and suggested I photograph it.  I must say I like the delicate pink color contrasting with the dark green.

From Mountains to Prairies

During my recent foray into the mountains of Banff and Jasper, I also had an opportunity to spend some time "shooting" with my brother on the prairies near Three Hills, Alberta.  We were met with some interesting skies and landscapes that as a coastal person I found intriguing.  Here is one that I liked very much and hope that you enjoy.

Early Morning at Lake Louise

Here is an early morning shot taken at Lake Louise.  It is not the typical shot of the glacier which is off to the right of this image.  I was struck by the early morning lighting and the reflection of this mountain which I believe is Mt. Fairview.  The small shack in the right foreground is the canoe rental place.

Banff Jasper Highway

This is Peyto (pi-tow) Lake along the Banff Jasper Highway.  I have been asked whether I made the lake this color of blue in photoshop.  The answer is that the lake is actually this color and is quite spectacular.

Back from Jasper and Banff

I just returned from a photo trip to Banff, and Jasper in Alberta.  Here is a sunset from Vermilion Lakes just outside of the Banff town.  I will post more images in the coming days.

The Serenity of Nature

This beautiful nature scene was found just north of Vancouver near Shannon Falls.  I love the serenity and peace that I sense from the image.

A Blue Sunset??

Here is an image taken on Vancouver Island during sunset.  I always liked the blue tone with just a hint of a fading sunset.  What makes the image for me is the seagull flying in my direction.

Enjoy

Compositions of Older Images

It has been sometime since I have posted and I guess that is because I haven't been doing much shooting lately.  I will take care of that in a couple of weeks when I head east to the Rocky Mountains for 10 days of shooting which should result in a couple of thousand images for me to work on.  Then in September I am heading north of the Arctic Circle in Alaska to photograph polar bears.  In the meantime I have been doing composites of earlier images.  The above is a composite of 2 images taken in Tofino.  The top third was an image I sort of liked, but always thought I should have more foreground.  Well through the magic of photoshop, here it is.

Stanley Park

It always amazes me how squirrels respond so quickly to the chance for food.  Come to think of it, perhaps we humans are the same.

Continuing in Stanley Park

Continuing our walk in Stanley Park we surprised this racoon having a snack.  He gave me a little snarl and we continued on our way.  This particular walk was good for seeing animals of all types and I will continue to post some of my favourites from the park.

Walking in Stanley Park

Continuing my walk of the other day in Stanley  Park, I came across this fellow who spotted us from out in the lagoon.  Obviously he thought we had some food.  As he or she got closer, we did reward it with some food.  Hope you enjoy.

A Red Eyed Towhee

Yesterday as I was walking in a nearby park with my daughter and grandson, I came across this colorful little fellow.  I had never seen a guy like this before, so to the internet I went.  He is in fact a red eyed towhee also called "chewinks" for their call and "ground robins" because like robins they are ground feeders.  They belong to the family "Fringillidae" or family of finches.  And now you know!!

Snow in Vancouver !!!!!

While it is not unheard of that we get snow in Vancouver, it is always a surprise to us when it happens.  This morning my grandson invited me over to see the snowman he and his dad and mom made this morning.  I decided to take my camera along and here is the beast, all 8 ft high of him.

Back to Ukraine

I last visited Ukraine in 2003 when I took my mother there on a tour to see the birthplace of her parents in SW Ukraine.  I have always remembered the friendliness of the people and thought I would go back some time.  With no return on the immediate horizon, I thought I would review some of the images I took then.  I would love to return and do a better job of portraying the country and people with my work.

A Beautiful Day in Vancouver

Today was a magnificent day in Vancouver!  I had the opportunity to see the new apartment of my daughter's brother and sister in law.  As they are on the 38th floor of their apartment building, I thought the view would be good.  However, I was wrong, the view was magnificent !!!

Sand Dunes at Night

In keeping with my theme of showing composite images, here is one that I quite like.  The sand dunes were taken in Namibia during the day, and the sky comes from Hawaii also during the day.  My manipulating both images and then placing them together, I came up with the attached.  Enjoy.

Back To Alaska

A nice image taken about 30 miles north of Haines Alaska along the Chilkat River.  A beautiful sunny day compared to the other days which gave us snow, and then rain.

A Pine Marten from Alaska

This little guy actually framed himself in my shot, by peeking nicely over a small mound of snow.  The fact it was snowing at the time added the white spots to his face.

Truly a "lucky" image by being in the right place at the right time.

A Prickly Fellow !!!!

I have a kind of affection for all the critters that I photograph around the world.  In my continuing editing of images taken in the past, I came across this fellow and an image I took in Alaska some years ago.  I like this image a lot.  After watching for about 5 minutes the red berries were all gone, and he moved on.

The Way I Look At Things

I have always had an affirmation that I try to remember and live by, and that is: "when you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change"!  I apply this not only to new things that I may see, but also things I have seen in the past.  These things are usually represented by the thousands of images I have on my computer.  In my spare time, I revisit these "things", and reprocess them by changing the light, trying new filters, applying new procedures that I have learned.  Such is the case with the rose above.  As I looked at it the other day, it was a photo of a rose.  Nothing special, just a rose!  Today I viewed in a different light and feel that it gives it more character and interest, at least to me.

Maybe if we could see things and people in a "different light", the world would be a better and more interesting place.

More Places I Have Been

I always loved the deep red/orange color of the walls in the Forbidden City in Beijing China.  However each time I took an image the sky was less than thrilling for me.  Today while reviewing some of my China images, I decided to give more impact to some of my China shots by adding a more dramatic sky.  The above image has become one of my favourites after the change in sky.

Places I Have Been

Today was a day off work and I decided to revisit some of my old images from the far flung places of the world.  Today I choose Turkey and specifically Cappadocia which is in central Turkey.  I hope you enjoy this image of a village which is build to the top of the rock.

A Small Creek in Iceland

I am not sure what attracted me to this image today but here it is hopefully for your enjoyment.  This is a small stream in Iceland and I spent a couple of hours here one day just observing and "feeling" the area.  As I came upon this image today it definitely took me back to Iceland.

Views of Winters Past

While we bask in +11C temperatures here in January, I came across some images that I took in the winter of 2008.  I must say I prefer my winter in past images rather than having to endure heavy snowfalls today.

One of our Hawaiian Friends

This is one of 2 red crested cardinals that frequent our home in Kauai.  My grandson thinks they are his friends and wonder why they are around so often.  I suggest to him because we continually feed them bread crumbs.  It seemed that wherever we went on the island we would see 2 cardinals together.  My grandson thought they were always the same ones following him.  Who am I to say he is not correct?

Night Sky in Hawaii

Here is an image that was about a 25 second exposure one night.  I was experimenting taking night skies (which didn't work), but liked this shot.  The cloud are lit up by the rising moon.  To the naked eye the sky was almost black and the moon light not yet visible.

How to Use Master Images

In my last post I showed a digital art image made entirely from Photoshop.  In thinking how I would use such images, I decided to experiment a little and combine some images.  I have many images of beautiful models and thought I would combine a couple of them within the pattern of the base.  Here I have combined 2 images into the base.  I will continue to combine actual photos with textured images and post some more during the coming days.

I hope you enjoy and are creating a wonderful 2011 for yourself.

Textures and Backgrounds

Hard to believe, but for the above image no camera was used or required.  It shows the magic of Photoshop where I can create colour backgrounds and designs out of virtually nothing.  This above image will be used as a background or layer on another photography.  I can adjust the opacity to my liking making it bold as you see here, or very light so it blends with a compatible image.

Just some of my creativity getting out of control.

Black and White Drama

Here is an image that I like in colour, but I also love the drama in this black and white rendering.  It was early morning just after sunrise and we were in the shadow with the sun starting to light the clouds and some of the crashing waves.  The moon was still visible and about 1 hour from setting in the western sky.

Images of Hawaii

This beautiful Hibiscus caught my eye while I was touring a mountain side garden with my daughter and grandson.  The evidence of recent rains complete the image to my eye.  Hope you enjoy.
